The burnisher
Heat and pressure.
The bench burnisher is rubbed along a wetted edge under moderate pressure. Friction warms the collagen, wax and gum tragacanth in the edge coat, and the fibres compact into a smooth, closed face.
Why hardwood.
Boxwood or lignum vitae — they polish rather than abrade. Softer woods drag; harder ones scorch.
